Our Drop-in & Outreach

Support at Am Fasgadh and An Drochaid

We offer support to anyone living in the Skye and Lochalsh area who is suffering from mental health difficulties. We operate from two primary locations to ensure support is accessible across Skye and Lochalsh; Am Fasgadh (The Shelter) in Portree and An Drochaid (The Bridge) in Kyle of Lochalsh.

You do not need a medical referral, or an appointment to attend our drop-in centres. You don't even need to phone ahead—you can simply walk through our doors for a friendly chat and a cuppa.

The key to what we do is a homely atmosphere where people feel a sense of ownership and belonging. People often talk about Am Fasgadh in terms of friendship and being like a family. Informality is very important to us and coming to Am Fasgadh doesn’t feel like using a “normal” mental health service. We have an open door policy and welcome anyone affected by mental ill health. There’s no need to make an appointment. Everyone comes and goes as they please. We won’t bombard you with forms and questions. We understand that there are good days and bad days and we’ll try to provide whatever help we can.

We appreciate that coming to a place like Am Fasgadh or An Drochaid for the first time can be really daunting, but you’re not alone. However isolated you feel, other people have struggled with similar situations and will understand what you’re going through. You’ll be welcomed exactly as you are without judgement.

We also offer outreach support by referral only through the local Mental Health Team.

Am Fasgadh – Portree

A home from home.

Am Fasgadh (the shelter) is our Portree drop-in centre. Open 365 days a year, it provides a safe and comfortable place in which to escape the isolation that so often goes with a mental health problem. We don’t do therapy or counselling but we what we do provide is friendship and support with a human face.

We offer advice and guidance, emotional support, help with forms and phone calls, help in dealing with other organisations and speaking up for what you want, plus whatever practical support we can.

What I appreciate most about Am Fasgadh is the food. Mental health is improved by eating properly. When I’m not at Am Fasgadh I’m heating up ready meals, but I always feel better for a good substantial meal and what you get there is as good as in any of the cafes in Portree.

What you’ll find here:

  • A Warm Welcome: A relaxed space to have a chat, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee (50p all day), and see what we have to offer.
  • Daily Lunch: A freshly prepared hot meal served every day at 12:00 PM for just £3.00 and teas and coffees all day for 50p.
  • Facilities: Laptops and tablets with free internet access, as well as laundry facilities (washing machine and tumble dryer available for members' use at £1 per load).
  • Space for You: A quiet room if you ever want to chat with someone in private, alongside social spaces for watching TV or relaxing.
  • Activities & Trips: We regularly host workshops and classes run by our staff or guest trainers, and we arrange group trips from time to time.

Our Cafe Prices:

  • Soup - £1.50
  • Main meal - £3.00
  • Pudding - £1.50
  • Tea / Coffee - 50p
  • Sandwich / Toastie - £1.50

South Skye and Lochalsh Service

An Drochaid – Kyle

To ensure support reaches the wider community, An Drochaid acts as our drop-in outreach service covering South Skye and Lochalsh. It brings the same trusted, relaxed environment of Am Fasgadh to the Lochalsh area.

We also provide a minibus service for our members to attend the Portree Drop-in (Am Fasgadh) each Wednesday. This enables our South Skye and Lochalsh members to experience all the facilities available to the North Skye members and to socialise with a larger group, as well as being able to visit the shops in Portree etc.

When We Meet:

Every Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Where to Find Us:

The Lighthouse Coffee Shop Building, Kyle of Lochalsh.

If you are interested in attending our outreach service or want to find out more, please get in touch with us directly at 01478 613533.

I look forward to An Drochaid as the highlight of my week. It’s given me someone I can turn to in dark times.

What you’ll find here:

  • The Same Great Support: We are here to provide friendly company, a listening ear, advice, and immediate, hands-on help with stressful tasks like filling out forms.
  • Free Lunch & Refreshments: Join us for a hot soup and bread lunch, alongside teas and coffees throughout the day—all provided entirely free of charge.
  • Private Spaces: If you need a confidential chat, we have a couple of private spaces available. These are perfect if you want to speak quietly with our staff or if you need a discreet, comfortable place to meet with your Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN).
  • Activities & Days Out: Just like our main hub, we arrange local activities and special days out from time to time to help everyone stay connected.
